For those of us who live in the United Kingdom or the Commonwealth, this is the day when we remember all those who gave their lives in brave defence of the freedom of the world, and also those who continue to die in conflict in the presence day. Below are a few prayers, verses and hymns which reflect the contemplative spirit of this day and equivalent days around the globe.
They went with songs to the battle, they were young.
Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.
Almighty God, the God of justice, not oppression,
The God of peace, and not of violence,
Deepen our gratitude for those who,
In war and conflict, gave themselves that we,
And those of every nation, might live without fear;
Preserve the peace we now enjoy,
And extend it wherever the scars of conflict remain unhealed,
That your Kingdom of righteousness and peace
May triumph over all divisions which mar Your world,
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen
Praise to the Lord, the almighty, the King of creations;
O my soul, praise him, for he is thy health and salvation:
All ye who hear,
Now to his temple draw near,
Joining in glad adoration.
Praise to the Lord, who o'er all things so wondrously reigneth,
Shieldeth thee gently from harm, or when fainting sustaineth:
Hast thou not seen
How thy heart's wishes have been
Granted in what he ordaineth?
Praise to the Lord, who doth prosper thy work and defend thee;
Surely his goodness and mercy shall daily attend thee:
Ponder anew
What the Almighty can do,
If to the end he befriend thee.
Praise to the Lord! O let all that is in me adore him!
All that hath life and breath, come now with praises before him!
Let the Amen
Sound from his people again:
Gladly for ay we adore him.
O my soul, praise him, for he is thy health and salvation:
All ye who hear,

Let us remember before God, and commend to His sure keeping, all those who have died as a result of war, those whom we knew and whose memory we treasure, and all who have lived and died in the service of humanity.

The God of peace, and not of violence,

When you get home, tell them of us and say “for your tomorrow, we gave our today.
